How does Kroger process personal checks?
To cash a check at Kroger, bring the following things to Kroger’s Money Service:
- The check
- Social security or taxpayer ID number
- A government issued ID (Kroger accepts; US Passports, state issued ID, driving licenses, resident alien ID, military ID, matricula consular ID and tribal nation/reservation ID)
In order to for your personal check to be processed by Kroger the following steps will need to be completed:
- Kroger staff will ask to see some form of government ID to verify that your identity matches the name on the check. A Passport or Driving License is ideal.
- Kroger will then use a third-party verification service (currently they use Certegy) to verify your check.
- The verification service will verify the bank details and check the amount before authorizing the check to be accepted.
- If they cannot verify your details you will need to pay using a different payment method.
- If your details are successfully verified then you will then be asked to sign an electronic receipt for Kroger’s records.
- The money will be cleared within 2-5 business days.

Kroger will cash checks of up to $5,000 in value.
Checks of up to $2,000 cost $4.00 to cash and checks over $2,000 cost $7.00 to cash if you use your Kroger shoppers card.
If you don’t have a Kroger card then both fees are $0.50 higher.
