In 1917, David Vredenburg owned and managed stores under the name of Vredenburg & Lewis as part of the General Supply Company, an RLDS Church-owned company that was based in Iowa.
Later, in 1921, Charles Hyde started working in the General Supply Company as well, and as time went by both men joined forces to form what is now known as Hy-Vee, denoting the first two letters of Hyde and the first letter of Vredenburg.
